Preparing for a Long Roadtrip this Holiday Season
How to Prepare for Long Road Trips
With Christmas and the New Year just around the corner, many of us are facing the prospect of long, grueling road trips to visit family and friends. But there are a few essential boxes you should check before you hit the road.
In this article, we’ll walk you through them, explaining the essential steps you must take in order to prepare for a long car journey
Rest Up
Did you know that fatigue is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents? In a recent study, it was revealed that around 100,000 police-reported crashes per year that happend as a result of fatigue. This number could shoot up even more if we were to take into account fatalities and unreported accidents caused by drowsiness. So, make sure to get some good rest before embarking upon your journey. When ever possible, see if you can split the journey between multiple drivers so that you get the chance to take a nap.Take Frequent Breaks
On a related note, be sure to take plenty of breaks while driving. At the very least, you should consider taking a fifteen-minute break every two or three hours
Taking a break gives you the chance to recharge and refuel. Get a bite to eat, rehydrate, and take your eyes off the road for a bit; by doing so, you will find that your concentration gets a much-needed boost once you’re back behind the wheel. Without regular breaks, you run the risk of falling into“auto-pilot” and letting your focus slip.
Avoid Distractions
This, hopefully, goes without saying, but you should make sure to avoid distractions while on your journey. Long drives can get pretty boring, we know, but if you allow your attention to drift you could end up seriously regretting it.
If you’re traveling with kids, you might consider giving them a book to read or a portable game console to play on. In the case of the former, we highly recommend getting your children to wear headphones so that no unexpected noise breaks your concentration.
Prepare Your Car for the Journey
As well as preparing yourself and your family for the journey, you should also prepare your vehicle. Carry out any necessary maintenance before you leave, such as checking oil levels, tire pressure, tread depth, headlights, and so on.
Additionally, if you’re expecting cold weather, you should prepare accordingly. For example, you might consider switching to winter tires and installing winter wiper blades.
